(CANCELLED) Mycomedicines: Mushrooms for Human and Ecosystem Health (2018)

  • Date: July 23, 2018
  • Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm

— COURSE CANCELLED —

A Four Part Course

Dates: Mondays – 7/2, 7/9, 7/16, 7/23
Time: 6-8pm

Americans have long been averse to mushrooms, arguably due to British colonial influence on our attitudes regarding the kingdom Fungi. Many of us learn to fear wild mushrooms as kids, but very few move beyond that fear and into a more complex understanding of the numerous mushroom species native to Philadelphia, many of which have been used as medicine since ancient times. In recent years, we have seen a budding popular interest in mycology: the study of fungi as food, medicine and a crucial component of healthy ecosystems. This Edenspore course will introduce you to historical and cultural uses of mushrooms, properties of mycomedicines, species and constituents, field identification and foraging tips, hands-on preparation of medicines for personal consumption, and introductory cultivation techniques.

Each class will include resources, references, lecture-style information, and plenty of Q&A. Hands-on activities will occur as appropriate. Please come prepared with a notebook/journal, pen/pencil, and comfortable walking shoes. Mycomedicines for all!

Full-Course Cost: $120 for nonmembers, $80 for Bartram’s members, limited half-scholarships available for low-income students.
