About the Project
Scheduled for completion in 2020, FloatLab will be a one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art installation and learning laboratory on the Schuylkill River waterfront. The project will use sound and light to interpret the ecological health of the river directly adjacent to Bartram’s Garden, and to teach the public how to become environmental stewards.
The innovative design from artist J. Meejin Yoon combines the power of art and science, creating a platform for Philadelphians to engage with art and ecology in new ways. Techniques from architectural design, marine engineering, and naval architecture will create a unique experience: seeing the water at eye level, bringing previously invisible properties of the Schuylkill into focus. Interactive LED lighting will respond to marine activity, water temperature, and oxygen content, and allow visitors of all ages to experience the floating platform at different times of day. FloatLab will create space for synthesis—of public art and ecology, remediation and growth, industrial and botanical, building civic champions for Philadelphia’s rivers and wider ecosystem.
